READING THE BIBLE

(Pray to the Holy Spirit before reading Scripture!)

 

"You will find your Lord in the Bible, and that is why your contact with the revealed text has a special meaning.  It is contact with God who loves you and desires to affect you with his grace.

"This contact leads you to inner conversion, its greatest purpose. You should, therefore, not read the Bible just to satisfy your curiosity, or to gain knowledge, or to find a solution to a problem that is nagging you,  although this will be needed at times.   You should take advantage of this form of contact with the Lord in hope that He will bestow the grace of conversion on you.  

"If you enter into a person to person relationship with Christ, who is present throughout the inspired text, this text will permeate you.Then you will begin to listen intently to the Word of God, understand better the thoughts and desires of Jesus, and begin to know him even better.  Saint Jerome warns,  "Ignorance of the Holy Scriptures is ignorance of Christ."    Listening intently to the Word of God will influence your choices and decisions.  You will want them to be in accordance with his teachings and desires.

"Saint John the Baptist stands in a rocky landscape, a reference to the wilderness in which he lived as a young man, dressed in a camel-hair tunic and eating only locusts and honey.

"He embraces a lamb, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice, and points towards heaven. According to the Gospel, when Saint John met Christ he declared: ‘Behold, the Lamb of God’. These words are inscribed in Latin on a ribbon wound around a reed cross, one of Saint John’s attributes (a symbolic object associated with him).

Jesus and Mary desire that my pure heart, so long hidden and unknown be now honored in a special way. Let my children honor my most pure heart in a special manner on the First Wednesday of the month by reciting the Joyful Mysteries of the rosary in memory of my life with Jesus and Mary and the love I bore them, the sorrow I suffered with them. Let them receive Holy Communion in union with the love with which I received the Savior for the first time and each time I held Him in my arms. Those who honor me in this way will be consoled by my presence at their death, and I myself will conduct them safely into the presence of Jesus and Mary."

Blessed Charles of Austria
Patron Saint of World Peace

(1887 – 1922) He was Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary,  King of Croatia, King of Bohemia and the last of the monarchs belonging to the House of Habsburg-Lorraine to rule over Austria-Hungary.  

Blessed Charles was beatified by Pope Saint John Paul II on October 3, 2004.  His feast day is October 21, the date he was married to his wife, Zita, in 1911.  (Zita is now being considered for sainthood as well.)  

Pope John Paul II called him "Prince of Peace" in his beatification ceremony, and Church leaders have praised Charles for putting his Christian faith first in making political decisions, and for his role as a peacemaker during the war, especially after 1917.  After WWI he was exiled with his family and died soon after in Madeira, age 34.  At the beginning of the cause for canonization in 1972 his tomb was opened and his body was discovered to be incorrupt.
